Question Pool

The Question Pool enables you to create, build, and manage large sets of questions into assessments, tests, or exams. Because your Question Pool can include a vast number of questions, you can use Advanced Search to find specific questions within the pool using a wide variety of searchable criteria.

One of the main features of the Question Pool is the ability to randomize questions. This means that you can set up an assessment to present a different set of questions from the Question Pool every time it is accessed. To use this feature, you must first create a category (in the tree, right-click and choose Add Category) and then add the questions to that category. When you add your questions in the Question Pool asset, you select the category and specify the number of questions you want to have in your assessment.

You can use the tree view to categorize and filter the question pool. In the grid, you will find the types of questions you created and you can select to edit a particular question type or preview it.

Note
When you edit questions, you are editing the original question in the Question Pool. You can use the quiz container to pull random questions from a category in the Question Pool by just adding categories instead of the individual questions, which is why it's set up in this way. You can also have several quizzes that all use the same questions from the Question Pool. For example, if you want to copy a quiz in a language and duplicate the questions in another language, you need to copy the quiz, then delete the questions from the quiz and add new ones.

Creating questions

To add a new question in the Question Pool, click Add New and choose the question type you want to create.

In the Question Editor, you can specify the different settings for your questions:

  • Question tab - is where you create your questions.
    Note
If you need to change the number of options for a question, add or delete these first to avoid losing you text when the page refreshes.
  • Settings tab - enables you to specify whether you want to provide additional feedback on answers, whether the user has to answer the question, and whether a question has to be correct before they can go on to the next question. The Internal ID enables administrators to keep track of the questions within a category.
  • Media tab - lets you insert media files in the question.
  • Lesson Objectives tab - contains the lesson objectives available in the Question Pool that you want to assign to the question.
    Note
To edit, delete, or create a learning objective, go back to the Question Pool page and click Lesson Objectives
  • Categories tab - is where you can assign the question to a category.

The following question types are supported:

Tailored content

You can use the Question Pool to group your test items into categories so that, once these items are answered, they direct you to a new set of questions depending on your score. This capability means that you can develop individualized content sessions for different learners. Within a specific category, you can assign users the following roles to define what they can do:

  • Question Pool Viewer – can view questions (along with question settings) within the
    category
  • Question Pool Editor – can create and edit questions within the category
  • Question Pool Approver – can add comments to each question and approve the
    question for use in exams
  • Question Pool Administrator – has all the capabilities of the previous three within the
    category.

When a user role is granted to a user or group from a parent category, that same role is
cascaded down to its child subcategories, thus allowing the user or group to have the same
access to the child categories of the category in which the role is created in.

Along with categories, you can use learning objective to group your questions based on what
the learning objective a question is designed to assess. Questions can also be assigned to one or more learning objectives.

Feedback

When you create a question either from the asset or in the Question Pool, you can also add specific feedback for when the question is correctly or incorrectly answered. When users see feedback is specified by the settings on Question Pool asset, where you can specify that users receive instant feedback (on the Main tab) or that they can review the questions at the end of the test (on the Settings tab).

Reporting

With the Question Pool you can track statistics such as how many users have taken a specific test, the answers given per item, and the amount of time spent on individual questions.
